Founded in 1971, UTPL serves 4,000 students locally through face-to-face education and 25,000 students nationwide through distance education. It also provides higher education to Ecuadorian migrants living in the United States, Italy and Spain. In 2002, UTPL started on a strong internationalization program pursuing quality improvement, branding, international profile and reputation, intercultural competencies for students, and internationalization of curricula. The program included student mobility, international centers, faculty international training, networks, associations and international partnership and projects, academic workshops and conferences.
