This panel consists of individuals who have been involved in global education and have had successful global careers to discuss how to identify, advise, and encourage Latino candidates at HSIs to compete for top national awards that may lead to global careers. Directors of national programs often underscore the fact that Latino undergraduates at HSIs are highly desirable but may not have the confidence to apply or the knowledge and skills to produce winning applications, essays, and polished oral interviews. The inability to access funds from these competitive awards represents missed personal and academic development opportunities that are key determinants of future success among populations underrepresented in the most competitive and prestigious global careers. Improving this situation is crucial not just for the students; raising a university’s competitiveness in these awards brings broader national recognition for academic excellence, especially among HSIs. Award-winning students enhance their own professional possibilities as well as the future economic viability of Latino communities. (Session will be videotaped)
